FLEET GEAR

Fleet Gear is a prototype hat line forged from ocean plastic. Bionic yarn has made it possible to create and produce apparel, footwear, and now beanies from yarn made of intercepted ocean plastic.

Fleet Gear symbolizes the fleeting moments we encounter when using plastic. Fleet Gear intends to extend the life of single use plastics and support our environment while doing so. Single use plastics and ocean plastic together are a heavy problem. Not one person can move it. But together, as a fleet of vessels for change, we hope to shed light on the impacts of ocean plastic and alternative ways we can harvest the 700 million tons of plastic in our oceans.

STREET ROAST

Role: Illustrator & Graphic Designer
Studio: Ideaville
Creative Director:
Client: Street Roots

We partnered up with Street Roots and began to look for a way to create more opportunity and revenue for the company and the homeless community in Portland. With many ideas from one-for-one hotel models to beer, we decided coffee is an established thriving opportunity. With Street Roots, we wanted to create advocacy, break misconceptions, and show that the homeless community is just like us. Street Roast is a series of three coffee bag designs: The Poet, Artisan and Messenger. These are all roles people in the homeless community play a part in. They are aspects that are a part of creating the Street Roots newspaper.

Along with ideating and helping with decision making in every aspect, I mainly focused on the development of characters and illustrating the human forms. I went through many drafts and illustrating techniques. We settled on a punk and modest tattoo aesthetic that could be relateable to the homeless community and the Street Roots supporters. The Messenger, Artisan and Poet all were inspired by actual people and roles within the Street Roots community. To capture these characters, I would first sketch the character out then render them in Illustrator, adjusting them until they captured realism and life. My partner would then go in and enhance the line weights and add texture to give the illustrations the grungy look we were going for.

STREET ROAST

Is a true stimulus package: Every bag sold generates additional income for Street Roots, a nonprofit that creates opportunities for people experiencing homelessness and poverty.

THE MESSENGER

Standing on street corners around the Portland metro area, Street Roots vendors are delivering much more than a newspaper. These vendors are messengers of hope, community, resilience and opportunity.

THE ARTISAN

Street Roots vendors work hard every day to rebuild their lives and contribute to their community in a positive way. Building community with the public to create authentic relationships and create social change makes the perfect artisan.

THE POET

Street Roots hosts a weekly creative writing group to create poetry and other works. Self-expression is a tool vendors use to create self-worth and hope in the world we live. Poetry is published in the newspaper and featured in the annual zine sold during the winter holiday season.

SWEETHEART ST. JOHNS

For this class project, we chose companies we wanted to focus on all term and, through research and design, re-brand  the company. I chose my favorite bakery in Portland called Sweetheart St. Johns. This company does not have a store front and is run by one woman and her husband. They have pop ups all over the city and make specialty cakes and pastries. Most of her marketing and sales are through Instagram. Keeping this in mind, I created a logo set that would work well on social media and on collateral. I wanted to keep her logo hand-drawn and quirky to fit the Portland scene. Since Instagram is so heavily ingrained in her brand, square imagery and Polaroids are a theme in my brand book and brand displays.

Dam City Classic

Beaver Athletics, Ideation

NCAA Basketball Tournament Presented by Oregon State University & Toyota. December, 2016, 2017, 2018

Dam City Classic is a revival of the Far West Classic. Oregon State University Basketball teams invite other west coast colleges to participate in the weekend long men’s and women’s basketball tournament at the Portland Moda Center.

I designed the logo to highlight the familiar Portland skyline and the common basketball call out: “Nothing but net!”

The logo has been used for both 2016 and 2017 tournaments; featured on various stadium banners, jumbotron, advertisements, posters, signs and passes.

BENNY'S BITES

Benny’s Bites is a redesign of a concession stand at Reser Stadium. The look and feel I designed with bold outlines and clean illustrations will be applied throughout other stadium concessions.

ALULA

Our final group project in our Collaborative Processes course, we were assigned clients to assist. Our client was Cindy Gilbert. Cindy Gilbert is the founding director of the Minneapolis College of Art and Design sustainable design program. She also has her own private sustainable ideas company. Cindy asked us to help her brand her company, Alula. She asked us to create branding guidelines, a logo, business cards and a website.

Alula is a finger-like bone in a bird’s wing. It essentially is its thumb. To merge ideas of an alula and sustainability, we created a logo that look both like a feather and a leaf. The bottom portion is a leaf curling up into an indigo feather. This logo can be paired with the typeface or on its own.

We chose Filson soft as our typeface because it is a soft round organic shaped typeface. The hookless “a” also helps play up the palindrome look while still remaining legible and not look too forced.

For color, we wanted bright and energetic colors like our client’s personality. We also wanted a simple clean feel. We chose three colors, white, indigo and teal. The teal we chose is vivid and saturated. We wanted a green to help paint the story of sustainability but without the earthy green. To help balance the unnatural we chose a very natural but vibrant blue, indigo. With the “unnatural” green and vibrant natural blue together you still gain the bio mimicry effect without falling into the “green” cliche seen in this style of design.

KEEN

KEEN Footwear came to our class asking us to design a shoe for any woman in the work force.

My teammate and I decided to design a shoe for a woman who is in the medical care field. Realizing how beneficial the steal toe is for women who work in construction, we also imagined doctors would also need a protected toe bed. A comfortable toe bed would also be required and beneficial since most people in doctors offices and the medical field are on their feet all day.

With the iconic look of a KEEN shoe in mind, we slimmed down the shoe, added a cushioned heel for support and a more feminine feel. The colors we choose are inspired by nature's sunrise and sunset. Each color way is different providing either a vibrant and loud color way or a more relaxed and peaceful color scheme. Lastly, we added unique straps for more support and colored soles and stitching for added color pops.

BEAVER SPORTS PODCAST

Re-brand of the Joe Beaver show with hosts Mike Parker and Jon Warren

Originally called the Joe Beaver show, Beaver Sports Podcast takes its place. Looking to reach a wider audience, Beaver Sports Podcast  wanted a logo that could give their voices an image.

Inspired by traditional caricature, I started the process with quick sketches of Parker and Warren. With Illustrator, I was able to further manipulate and exaggerate features. Matching skin tones, I used the paint brush to shape the illustrations. A wood plank was added to house the show’s name and Oregon State Beaver.

It was really exciting to get great feedback from the athletic department and podcast listeners on social media, as well as from Parker and Warren themselves.

HAIL MARY'S

Hail Mary’s provides elevated alcohol and healthy small plate options for club level fans at Reser Stadium. Hail Mary’s was converted from an old sandwich cart into a bloody mary bar.

A day before the opening game, the construction of the cart was finished. I executed the chalk art illustrations on the three chalk panels already installed. I was given free rein and had so much fun creating as I went.

From a rough sketch and a list of bloody mary ingredients, I mixed colors for bright attention grabbing vegetables and unified all the hand illustrations with a white outline and wheat illustrations.
